This week, the students previewed and started reading the Native American folktale, The Girl and the Chenoo (Bruchac). This is a folktale from the Passamaquoddy people who lived in what is now northern New England and southeastern Canada. This is a folktale about a girl, Little Listener, who meets the Chenoo, a monster, with unexpected results. We practiced retelling and checking for understanding by asking who? and what? a section is about. Next week, we will continue to monitor our understanding and dig deeper by asking different types of questions.
Some books related to the theme of bravery and The Girl and the Chenoo include: Sheila, the Brave (Henkes) The Rough-Faced Girl (Martin) Between Earth and Sky: Legends of Native American Sacred Places (Bruchac)

After finishing the Chinese folktale The Jade Stone this week, students completed a vocabulary activity and an interpretive drawing exercise. Students then analyzed how the main character was brave.
Some books that I recommend related to the theme and topics include: Brave Irene (Steig) Liang and the Magic Paintbrush (Demi) The Hunter (Casanova) This week, students in groups 1-3 met for the first time. We have started reading from the Junior Great Books Series 2 set of stories. Throughout the unit, students will explore what it means to be brave. Students will read both fiction and nonfiction stories. We practiced pre-reading strategies and started reading the Chinese folktale The Jade Stone. To monitor our understanding, we are asking who and what passages are about. I encourage you to practice this "check for understanding" strategy at home while reading with your child.
