Writing Procedural Texts, Book Recommendations    Week 1

1/8/2016

This week the students were introduced to the new ALO Unit - Writing Procedural Texts. This unit uses an inquiry-based structure in which the students analyze mentor texts and then use them for inspiration in their own writing.

Students listened to How to Teach a Slug to Read (Peterson). They identified time order words and examined how the author organized the book. Students have completed the first step of the Writing Process by brainstorming ideas for their own How To or procedural text. We will look at some more mentor texts next week and then start drafting!

Here are some books I recommend from this genre: How  to Talk to Dads (Greven - A kid!), Pancakes for Breakfast (DePaola), How to Babysit a Grandpa (others in the series) (Reagan), Growing Vegetable Soup (Ehlert).
