These include:
  • the selection of a Golden Lines/Passage.
  • the explanation for and analysis of the Golden Lines/Passage.
  • definitions and sentences or pictures for corralled (p. 67), posterity (p. 81), and  behemoth (p. 85)
  • 1-2 THICK questions. 

On Wednesday, Jan. 27 we will have a quiz. It will cover the following:
  • vocabulary words
  • the phrase "seeing the elephant"
  • figurative language
On Monday, January 25 we will review for the quiz, so you all should be well-prepared.

HW DUE Friday :
Read 5/27-6/11 and complete a Reading Response Entry.
This includes: a Golden Lines/Passage and explanation, 1-2 THICK questions, and vocabulary activities for blasphemy (p. 24).
  • This week the students will explore the euphemism "seeing the elephant" which was a popular phrase used by emigrants on the Oregon Trail and forty-niners traveling to California for the gold rush. 
  • We will explore the covered wagons emigrants used as transportation.
  • We will research some topics that we come across in the novel such as cholera and the Pawnee Indians.

The second session of ALO is part of the Walk to Read Unit in 4th grade. Students met for the first time this week and were introduced to the novel Jedediah Barstow: An Emigrant on the Oregon Trail (Levine).
