This week, the students previewed and started reading the Native American folktale, The Girl and the Chenoo (Bruchac). This is a folktale from the Passamaquoddy people who lived in what is now northern New England and southeastern Canada. This is a folktale about a girl, Little Listener, who meets the Chenoo, a monster, with unexpected results. We practiced retelling and checking for understanding by asking who? and what? a section is about. Next week, we will continue to monitor our understanding and dig deeper by asking different types of questions.
Some books related to the theme of bravery and The Girl and the Chenoo include:
Sheila, the Brave (Henkes)
The Rough-Faced Girl (Martin)
Between Earth and Sky: Legends of Native American Sacred Places (Bruchac)
